Former WACO Owner Publishes Reality Does Not Negotiate

By General Aviation News Staff · October 6, 2026 · 2 Comments

DETROIT — Peter F. Bowers, former owner of the WACO Aircraft Company, has published “Reality Does Not Negotiate: Lessons from Building and Selling a Niche Luxury Business.” It is available in print, ebook, and audiobook on Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books.

In 2008 Bowers bought the only modern maker of FAA-certified open-cockpit biplanes. The first year produced a loss of more than $1 million. The book is what he did next: A market of fewer than 2,000 serious prospects, sales cycles measured in years, and about half the revenue from people who had already bought once.

The operating core is five responsibilities of leadership: Vision, structure, a definition of success, an ethical line, and accountability. It also covers when to walk away, why the exit belongs in the plan on day one, and what happens when a niche business is sized to a story instead of to demand.

WACO closed its U.S. operations in 2026. The book treats that ending as evidence, according to Bowers.

“You can decorate a business,” he said. “You cannot decorate demand.”

Bowers sold the company and stayed through the transition. He still flies, and consults on building, running, and exiting demanding businesses.
