In a year when aviation safety has been in sharp focus, the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has unveiled a new resource that examines root causes and lessons learned from 15 business aircraft accidents from recent years.
The new Spotlight on Safety Accident Compendium, introduced at the 2025 Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), includes expert analysis of those incidents and accidents.
“As we all know, this has been a year marked by a number of troubling incidents and tragic accidents, including those involving business aviation,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “Some of this year’s incidents have involved longstanding root causes. By examining actual recent events with known causal factors, we can highlight the best practices needed to mitigate the likelihood of similar outcomes in the future.”
The compendium’s analysis is based on National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data and the NTSB’s proven methodology of finding data-driven solutions to improve safety by identifying factors that contribute to aircraft accidents, according to NBAA officials.
With a foreword by former NTSB Chair Robert Sumwalt, the NBAA compendium details findings by business aviation safety experts and aircraft accident investigators surrounding relatively common safety failures — including how rapidly deteriorating weather conditions can contribute to loss of control inflight or how flight crew distractions can lead to failure to follow safety procedures — any of which can lead to tragic consequences.
