An investigation has begun to determine what caused the FAA’s Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system to crash at 8:28 p.m. Jan. 10, 2023.
The outage led the FAA to ground most flights until 9 a.m. Jan. 11.
“Normal air traffic operations are resuming gradually across the United States following an overnight outage to the FAA’s Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system that provides safety information to flight crews,” FAA officials reported at 8:50 a.m. EST Jan. 11. “The ground stop has been lifted.”
Even before the ground stop was lifted, departures resumed at Newark Liberty (EWR) and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) airports “due to air traffic congestion in those areas,” agency officials reported.
“The agency continues to look into the cause of the initial problem,” officials added.
President Joe Biden told reporters the morning of Jan. 11 that the cause for the outage was not immediately known. According to a report from Reuters, the president has called for an investigation into the nationwide outage.
