Do you know your aircraft’s best glide speed?

A new fact sheet has been released by the FAA covering Best Glide Speed.

The General Aviation Joint Steering Committee determined that a significant number of general aviation fatalities could be avoided if pilots were better informed and trained in determining and flying their aircraft at the best glide speed while maneuvering to complete a forced landing.

    If you are flying an antiquated aircraft without a parachute then you need this information badly. Otherwise the critical thing to know is chute pull altitude for Cirrus which is 400 agl for the SR20 and SR22 and 600 agl for the SR22T.

    It would also be good if we were given the glide ratio for an aircraft. FF asks for this to compute a ring around your plane so you know what is within gliding distance and modifies it based on the winds aloft.

    Try as I might, I can’t find anything in the AIM for the plane I fly. Just the best glide speed.
