Lee Bottom prepares for 2016 fly-in

By Ben Sclair · February 1, 2016 ·

All airports are special. But privately-owned, publicly-available airports more so. And those that evoke the emotions of Indiana’s Lee Bottom Flying Field (64I) are truly unique.

Lee Bottom co-owners, Ginger and Rich Davidson play host to the annual Aviation Migration Fly-In (Sept. 16-18, 2016 this year). To be ready, the non-sexy part of airports must be attended to.

In 2016 that means “work on tired equipment, addition of permanent water lines to the hill side of the runway, and surveys which will allow for future improvements,” according to a January 2016 letter to Lee Bottom Family Members.

A publicly-owned airport relies on taxpayer-support. Privately-owned? Not so much. Rich and Ginger mailed to “family members” an appeal to contribute to their “Emergency Escape Fund.”

Donors can “contribute to the future of one of aviation’s great escapes. What level of escape are you looking for?”

Just a hop, skip and a jump from my home airfield (KLOU Bowman.) LOVE Lee Bottom and flying there.
