Aviation artist Sam Lyons hospitalized

By Janice Wood · July 10, 2012 ·

Facebook was the first indication something was amiss, then a call from Mindy Lyons, wife of famed aviation artist Sam Lyons, confirmed the news.

Sam is at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center with what doctors think is an allergic reaction to blood pressure medication. As a result of the reaction, Sam’s throat and tongue are badly swollen, so much so that Sam is now (as of July 10) on a respirator in the ICU.

Mindy assured me, “He’ll be fine, but he’s extremely frustrated.” Speaking specifically of recovery, on the morning of July 10, Sam awoke from a “restful night,” and motioned for his glasses so he could watch Fox News. “A terrific sign,” says Mindy.

I know many are huge fans of Sam’s work. His exhibit space at both SUN ‘n FUN and AirVenture are usually wall-to-wall people. So, as a show of support for Sam, please send him a get-well card. “Sam doesn’t do Facebook, or the web,” noted Mindy.

“So funny, get-well cards are the way to go.” You can send them to Sam Lyons, 568 Peninsular Drive, Lakeland, Fla., 33813. [Of note: no flowers, as he’s in ICU, or cards to the hospital.]

I hope Sam will have long been out of the hospital by the time your card reaches him, but a flood of support can only help.

Hang in there Sam, we are pulling for you.
