The B-17 Liberty Belle owned by the Liberty Foundation crashed in a field southeast of the Aurora, Illinois, Municipal Airport Monday morning at around 9:30 CDT, according to a report at EAA.org. All seven people on-board the non-revenue flight escaped, but the airplane caught fire and was destroyed. Read the full EAA report here.

It is bad enough when the national media misrepresents an aviation incident, I would have hoped the EAA and GA news would get their facts straight. The Liberty Belle did not crash! It made a successful forced landing after an engine fire. Look at this picture, the airplane does not have a
scratch on it and the number 2 prop is feathered. A retraction and an apology is in order.

It was an emergency landing. She landed on her gear thanks to the skill of the pilot. Crash is not a good word to use. She was a beautiful lady and will be missed sorely.
