The FAA has set a target for the elimination of leaded aviation fuel for all piston-powered aircraft by the year 2030. In an effort to speed up the transition at the local level, KLGB’s Unleaded Aviation Fuel Subsidy Program is designed to eliminate the cost difference between leaded avgas and unleaded avgas.

The FAA has given the nod to UL100E, the unleaded aviation field for piston-engine aircraft developed by LyondellBasell Industries/VP Racing, to advance to full-scale engine and flight testing.
EPA grant to help disadvantaged communities transition to unleaded avgas
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given a $776,636 grant to the California Department of Public Health that will “provide technical assistance to general aviation airports in California in disadvantaged communities to support the transition from leaded aviation gasoline (avgas) to unleaded avgas.”

Unleaded avgas on track to be at California airports by summer 2023
Reid-Hillview Airport of Santa Clara County (KRHV), Watsonville Municipal Airport (KWVI), and Meadows Field Airport (KBFL) in Bakersfield will be the first airports in the country to offer GAMI’s lead-free 100 octane FAA-approved avgas known as G100UL.

Continental gets the lead out
Continental has applied to the FAA to use unleaded aviation gasoline in more than 100 engine models, including select O-200s, IO-360s, O-470s, and IO-470s. As the industry searches for a long-term fuel solution, Continental considers 91UL and 94UL fuel as a transitional step in a long-term strategy to reach a more sustainable aviation, company officials said.

The hunt for unleaded avgas ramps up
The hunt for an unleaded replacement for 100LL began in earnest in March 2022 with the first meeting of the Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) initiative, which brought federal regulators, the oil industry, the aviation industry, and more together to find a solution for the entire general aviation piston aircraft fleet.
