A new post on Sporty’s Flight Training Central offers six tips to help pilots prepare for their checkride, as well as a list of Do’s and Don’ts.
The first tip: Don’t wait until checkride day to meet your examiner.
“This isn’t cheating — quite the contrary,” Erik Radtke, Chief Instructor at Sporty’s Academy, writes. “This is a wise, prudent step in preparing for the big day. Nearly all examiners have their ‘thing’ they may wish to emphasize or teach and if it’s important enough to test, it’s important enough to teach and learn.”
Another tip is to make sure the details are complete, from reviewing the experience requirements for the certification, to bringing your written test results, to having the payment in an acceptable form ready.
Eric offers several other tips, as well as a list of Do’s and Don’ts. The Do that caught my eye was: Relax in between maneuvers and don’t rush.
The Don’ts that stood out include:
- Don’t study obscure regulatory or AIM entries searching for the needle in the haystack.
- Don’t memorize answers. Learn the material, not someone else’s summary of the material. If you make a mistake, own it and move on.
- Don’t second guess. Your first instinct is usually correct.
