The accident happened during an approach to the airport in Chiloquin, Ore. The pilot, who told investigators he had landed at the airport more than 100 times, maneuvered the airplane on a higher-than-normal approach to avoid tall trees on the runway’s approach path.
The plane touched down at an excessive ground speed and began to veer left. The pilot attempted to regain directional control with rudder and brakes, but the plane continued off the left side of the runway and into a culvert and then flipped onto its back.
The pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries.
The NTSB determined the probable cause of the accident as the pilot’s unstabilized approach and excessive speed at touchdown, which resulted in a loss of directional control during the landing and a subsequent runway excursion.
