The Aviation Museum of New Hamphire’s ongoing Second Saturday series will present Col. William Moran, commander of the New Hampshire Civil Air Patrol, who will present a report on the photo-mapping missions carried out in the wake of Super Storm Sandy, on Feb. 8.
After the storm, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was in need of critical information involving storm damage along the eastern seaboard. Twenty different Civil Air Patrol wings, including the New Hampshire wing, undertook flights in designated areas and photographed the storm-stricken region. That data was used to help process claims and disperse federal funds to victims.
A typical mission involved at least a pilot and a photographer. The photography was done with hand-held cameras and required painstaking efforts in order to capture the needed information, according to CAP officials. In all, more than 158,000 images were uploaded to FEMA.
The program begins at 11 a.m. on Feb. 8. Seating is limited and included in the price of museum admission and free to NHAHS members.
