High school students’ interest soared during the annual Lewis University Aviation Summer Camp on the university’s main campus in Romeoville, Ill. Participants piloted a general aviation aircraft and trained in an FAA-approved-flight simulator, among other activities.
The students experienced travel with a flight instructor and enjoyed access to the Lewis University fleet of planes. A highlight of the camp’s itinerary is a trip to O’Hare International Airport to experience how one of the nation’s busiest airports operates. Participants took a behind-the scenes tour of the facilities and met staff from the Chicago Department of Aviation.
Students also learned about aviation history, meteorology and flight theory from Lewis professors.
Bill Brogan, chair of Aviation and Transportation Studies and associate professor, commented, “The aviation camp always conveys a real love and interest in aviation for the participants.”
The 1993 Lewis alumnus previously served as Assistant Commissioner for the City of Chicago’s Department of Aviation, Airport Operations Supervisor for O’Hare International Airport, Chief Airport Operations Supervisor for Midway International Airport and Airport Manager of Merrill C. Meigs Field.
Providing aviation career opportunities in flight management, administration, maintenance, security and air traffic control, Lewis University offers the oldest aviation program among universities in Illinois. It is the only university aviation program in Illinois with an airport on campus. Lewis University is one of 36 institutions in the country certified by the FAA to offer the Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative Program.
