Twelve middle and high school students at Flabob Airport Preparatory School on Flabob Airport (RIR) in Riverside, Calif., are preparing for an unusual conversation: On Thursday, April 19, at 10 a.m. PDT, they will begin posing questions to an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.
The live question and answer session will last about 10 minutes before the station disappears beyond the horizon. The contact will occur in the EAA Chapter One Hangar on Flabob Airport and the event is open to the public free.
Organized by the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS), the opportunity is being coordinated by the Tom Wathen Center’s Kathy Rohm. In advance of the session, the students are learning about astronaut selection and training, the history and mission of the space station, mission control, rocket assembly, radio technology and communication topics.
