AVTweets debuts

By Janice Wood · May 11, 2011 ·

Avionics Specialists of Loveland, Colo., has just introduced two new services that deliver real-time METAR weather information directly to smart phones or any other internet device – AVTweets and a new, customized mobile website for viewing METARs: Airport View Mobile.

Using AVTweets, users can choose to automatically receive METAR updates for airports and other AWOS sites via Twitter. To follow an AWOS feed on Twitter, just look for the Twitter icon on the briefing page for that AWOS located at AirportView.net. For example, go to AirportView.net/briefing.php?lid=LAL and click on the Twitter icon to follow the Lakeland AWOS feed via twitter. Or, from your mobile phone, text ‘follow KLALawos’ to 40404 in the United States. For any other AWOS, simply put the ICAO identifier (K plus the 3 letter ID) for that facility followed by “awos” to follow that feed – KFNLawos, KOSHawos, etc.

You can also get current METARs on your phone without using Twitter. Visit Airport View Mobile using your smart phone web browser and enter the station ID of any AWOS in the world. Click ‘Go’ and you will see the most recent METAR for that facility. Then you can bookmark that page to get the latest report with one click and build a favorites list for one click access for other facilities’ of your choice.

Each of these products provides links to more detailed briefing information for the selected facility via the briefing pages. AirportView.net provides a suite of information for airports within the USA, including real time weather camera information for selected sites.
