Cessna Aircraft Co. was named the winner of a 2010 Clean Air & Sustainability Award during the City of Wichita’s Regional Energy Summit last week.
Cessna was selected by Wichita and the Metro Air Quality Improvement Task Force for its efforts to improve and preserve air quality in the four-county metro area and for incorporating sustainability measures in company operations.
“It is very satisfying to have our efforts recognized during this important summit,” said Dan Rogers, Cessna’s manager of environmental resources. “The entire Cessna community has embraced these initiatives and we are well on our way to our company goal of a 20% reduction in greenhouse gases, energy and waste by 2015.”
Cessna established an Environmental Strategy Council in 2008 that set energy and waste reduction goals and started a number of environmental programs to reach those goals. Programs yielding results in 2010 included companywide energy audits, installing light occupancy sensors, upgrading thermostats and adopting LEED standards for new construction. The 2010 results included a 5% reduction in energy consumption, a 1.2% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 6% reduction in waste generation.
