Recently released on DVD is “Thunderheads,” a documentary about a group of scientists, researchers and pilots — in seven planes and armed with the best high-tech gadgets money can buy — embark into the eye of a storm in an effort to understand the role of thunderstorms in the global warming puzzle.
The documentary chronicles what happens when an international force of 250 experts of the International Cloud Experiment converge on Darwin, Australia, site of “Hector”, one of the planet’s largest thunderstorms. As the pilots edge closer to the storm, they battle life-threatening turbulence, lightning, grapefruit-sized hail, mysterious gravity waves, and mechanical mishaps. Tensions begin to mount as the scientists push to solve the mysteries while the pilots push back to stay alive.
