In spite of some low overcast, typical in Southern California in June, the owners of Meyers aircraft converged on Flabob Airport in Riverside, Calif., for a weekend of camaraderie, local flying and trips to local attractions.
Many Meyers owners unable to fly in drove or made the trip by commercial airline. Three Meyers OTW pre-war trainer biplanes made the trip from the Midwest. Capt. Charles Downey (USNR Ret.) headed up the fleet from his home in Poplar Grove, Ill., joined by Major Michael Barg (USAF) from Clovis, N.M., and Jim Jones of Newton, Iowa.
Twenty Meyers 200s also showed up, along with a Micco SP-26, which is a derivative of the Meyers 145.
The group toured the March Field Air Museum and Planes of Fame Museum in Chino. Type related maintenance forums were held on Saturday. At the banquet held in the EAA Chapter One hangar, “Tired Butt” awards were given to the three OTW pilots and a fourth, who had a landing mishap en route and was not able to attend. Downey was awarded the Flagship of the OTW Fleet trophy and Marv Rogge of Las Vegas won the top honors for his Meyers 200.
The next Meyers Fly-In will be June 24-27, 2010, at Moraine Air Park in Dayton, Ohio.
