Former President George H.W. Bush attended the chartering of the Civil Air Patrol Texas Wing’s newest squadron on March 31. The George H. W. Bush Composite Squadron is the first CAP unit to be named for a U.S. president right from the start. The Independence Composite Squadron in Independence, Missouri, was renamed the Harry S. Truman Composite Squadron in 1973.
“We were delighted that President Bush has agreed to lend his name to our fledgling squadron,” said Lt. Col. Don Wheeler, squadron commander. “This is a great honor for the Texas Wing,” said Wheeler, who said that nearly 30 members have already joined the squadron.
The new unit emblem incorporates elements taken from the life of President Bush. “It is colorful and very good looking,” said Wheeler.
