Anywhere Map, a maker of portable moving map navigation and XM WX weather systems using handheld computers, now supports PDA “Smartphones.”
The Smartphones, such as the 6700 from Alltel, are complete cell phones and PDAs in one unit. They have excellent sunlight visibility and come complete with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology. With the new kits from Anywhere Map a pilot can have airborne and ground mapping/ navigation on the same unit. Two kits are available:
Anywhere Map Air/Ground: This kit is for navigation on the ground and in the air. It includes Anywhere Map software, DeLorme Street Atlas 2007, a Bluetooth GPS, a 2Gb miniSd card, and a mount. This kit costs $395 and includes six months of aviation GPS map updates and six months of 100LL.COM fuel prices.
Anywhere Wx Air/Ground: This kit adds aviation weather using Anywhere Map’s Anywhere Link technology. The Smartphone uses its fast data link to access weather content over the Internet anywhere the phone has data access. Customers get current NEXRAD, MET/TAF, and SFR/TRF data directly on their smartphone, right on top of Anywhere Map. You get everything that’s in the ground/air kit plus six months of Anywhere Link weather for $845.
If a pilot wants to add XM weather he can add the XM unit for $695. The smartphone can get XM data from the unit via Bluetooth just like it talks to the GPS.
