William W. “Bill” Hawkins of Camden, S.C., died Aug. 25 after a brief illness. He was 76.
Hawkins was manager of Woodward Field, Kershaw County Airport (CDN) and was inducted into the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame in 1995. In 1946, he joined the Army and was sent to Japan, returning home in December 1947. He joined the Civil Air Patrol in 1952 and, in 1958, took his first flying lessons at Camden Airport. In 1973, Hawkins bought his first airplane and was elected president of the South Carolina Breakfast Club, serving in that capacity for 10 years and then as historian. He became the FBO manager at Camden Airport in 1976 and airport manager in 1990. He was a charter member of the South Carolina Aviation Association and served four years on its board.
A longtime member and former president of EAA Chapter 3, he also was an active member of the Quiet Birdmen. Memorial services were held at Woodward Field.
